Dr. Hesham Abdelbary
MD, FRCSC - IMPACT Program Lead
Dr. Hesham Abdelbary is an orthopaedic surgeon and researcher at The Ottawa Hospital, where he specializes in musculoskeletal oncology and complex joint reconstruction. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Ottawa and serves as the Tier 2 Clinical Research Chair “Prosthetic Joint and Bone Infections” in the University’s Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Abdelbary is also a scientist in the Inflammation and Chronic Disease Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Dr. Abdelbary also holds a cross appointment to the Clinical Science and Translational Medicine (CTM) graduate program at the University of Ottawa. In addition to his academic and clinical roles, he is the Director of the Implant Associated Infection translational research program and serves as the co-lead of the prosthetic joint infection (PJI) clinical program, where he focuses on advancing patient care through innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the translation of scientific discovery into clinical practice.
Dr. Abdelbary earned his medical doctorate from McMaster University in 2003. He completed a Master of Science in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa in 2008, alongside the Clinical Investigator Program at the same institution. He received his Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2010.
Research Team
The IMPACT Program is supported by an interdisciplinary group of clinicians, scientists, and trainees with expertise in bacterial biofilms, bacteriophage biology, translational research, and clinical trial design. The team works collaboratively across disciplines to advance innovative approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of implant-associated infections.
Dr. Mariam Taha
MSc PhD
Scientific Manger at Dr. Abdelbary’s laboratory. Specialized expertise in bacteriology, bacteriophage and biofilm biology. Actively involved in bacteriophage invivo and invitro studies, clinical trial development, and translational research. PhD in Microbiology from the University of Ottawa.
Yusra Al Mosuli
MD PhD
Clinical Research Associate.Coordinates the division’s orthopaedic oncology and bacteriophage clinical trials. Involved in several translational research projects in regenerative medicine and cancer therapeutics.

Research Technician, focusing on animal models of PJI and therapeuticsMSc. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from the University of Ottawa, researching early onset ovarian cancer among BRCA mutation carriers Well acquainted with primary cell isolation and culture, (immune) histological staining and histopathology.
